Riyad el Mezouar boasts a rich historical past. A seventeenth and eighteenth century palace, its name originates from the official function of the “Mezouar”, the head of the Alaoui royal family to whom the Riyad belonged until 1945.
In this regard, it was honoured with the visit of King Mohammed V in the forties.
The mansion lately belonged to Moulay Idriss Sbaï, Caïd of El Kelaâ des Sraghna, then to the descendants of Hammadi el Glaoui, Calife of Ouarzazate and brother of the Pacha of Marrakech.
Riyad el Mezouar was transformed in a boutique hotel in 2000 by the interior designer Michel Durand-Meyrier after a careful restoration which preserved its unique character.
Architecture
The architecture of Riyad el Mezouar is truly exceptional. In this view, Riyad el Mezouar is one of the few authentic riyads of Marrakech
– which has been declared by the UNESCO part of the world cultural heritage - with a frontage of arcades and galeries running on all four sides and two levels.
Patio architecture
With its white façades of arcades on all four sides of the courtyard and its harmonious proportions, the architecture of Riyad El Mezouar is truly exceptional. The garden, which evokes the Garden of Eden according to the tradition, has been planted with aromatic and odorous plants.
